Punctal plugs are small, biocompatible devices inserted into the tear ducts to reduce tear drainage and improve eye moisture. By blocking the tear ducts (puncta), punctal plugs help retain more of the eye’s natural tears on the surface. There are temporary (dissolvable) and semi-permanent (silicone) options, depending on the patient’s needs.
Most of our patients don’t feel them at all. If you do, we can adjust or replace them easily.
Yes, they can be removed if needed. Temporary plugs dissolve in days or weeks; permanent ones can last months or years.
